What Remains of Edith Finch is an exploration adventure game presented as a collection of strange stories about a family in Washington state.
Adventure games that favor exploration and narrative over puzzles are rather commonplace nowadays. The great thing about these games is that they can be extremely varied thematically, even if the gameplay is rather similar across the board. Most notable examples include teen drama Gone Home, hilarious comedy The Stanley Parable, surreal crime solver The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (although this one does include actual puzzles), and the depressingly realistic The Town of Light.
In What Remains of Edith Finch, players will take on the role of titular character Edith. As you explore the colossal Finch house in Washington state, you’ll search for stories, learn more about her family’s history and try to figure out why Edith is the last one in her family left alive. The developers claim that What Remains of Edith Finch is “a game about what it feels like to be humbled and astonished by the vast and unknowable world around us”.
Apparently, the gameplay and the tone of each story will be unique and dependent on each member of the Finch family. Each story will let you experience the life of a new family member on the day of their death. The stories will range from being set in the present day to the distant past. The only things that won’t change are the first-person perspective and the fact that each story ends with that family member’s death.
What Remains of Edith Finch is the first Steam release for developer Giant Sparrow. Their first game, the artistic first-person adventure The Unfinished Swan, was released on PS3 in 2012. What Remains of Edith Finch is coming out on Steam and PS4 on April 25.Published in
